Who will
answer these questions? No one could answer these rhetorical questions not even
myself. I wiped my tears, as I walked down to where Chike was seated.
I went
straight to him, I looked at him very deeply. I could sense that Obim was about
to hide the truth from me.
‘’ Chike, what’s
wrong, why did everyone walked out on my day of introduction? Did I do anything
wrong to your family? Did papa say something he wasn’t meant to say?’’
Chike could not
answer me, he placed his hands on my shoulder as I knelt down, and he looked at
me, shakes his head and removed his hands from my shoulders and looked at the
other direction.
He looked
back to my direction and took a deep breath before he spoke: ‘’ hmmn! Dear! The
mighty man has fallen! ‘’
‘’ The
mighty man has fallen? Obim please says something I can understand. Who is the
mighty man that has fallen?’’
Chike
started to stammer: ‘’they ….they...They said that we are related. You … You...
You... you are my second cousin.
The words
managed to come out of his mouth as if they have been tied to his mouth and are
looking for a means to get loose.
‘’Jesus
Christ! ‘’! I shouted.
‘’What
nonsense are you saying Chike, please if this is a joke I need you to stop it.
Because I am not in the mood for any childish joke now.’’
The time I
knew that the matter has turned from joke to serious case was when papa came
out and said: ‘’ so you came to reproduce another offspring from the same blood
abi . Mbanu! I won’t be alive and watch this happen. Please I want you people to
start going before any eyes sees you in my house nor hear of this.’’
It was as
like a dream to me, watching my future crumble.
