Papa, Mama
and my siblings opened their mouths at the same time; it was a surprise and
good news to them. Mama came straight to me and hugged me and said with tears
of joy: ‘’ my daughter! God is never too late for anything. We thought that you
will never get married; I have prayed and fasted endlessly for you. And here we
are receiving g the good news. God is indeed faithful.’’
Papa, as
blunt as he is, didn’t say any word after mama talked to me, it was as if he
was calculating how many words he will say to me and the hours he will spend.
‘’ Thank
God! At last I will reduce the quantity of food I buy and the cups of rice to
be cooked. So when is our in-law coming to perform the rites.’’ Papa said
without a smile on his face.
Papa’s words
sounded like an insult and at the same like a joke. We all laughed over it, and
I told him that they would be coming on Saturday, but first he would come alone
for his first visit.
The day we
all have been waiting for finally came, I saw my husband for the first time in
his traditional attire, looking all prepaid and ready. Indeed he came to pluck
a ripe beautiful flower!
As time goes
on, everyone was getting to know each other better, although I knew where my
husband is from, and his village, but we both are from the same state.
As everyone was
talking, the dowry hasn’t even been paid, the next thing I heard was a loud
voice that drew everyone’s attention.
‘’ Never!
Never will my daughter marry you. I won’t allow this’ ’, papa shouted as he
stood from his chair.
I ran out
from my room to know what was happening. Papa came to me and said; ‘’ what
shame have you brought upon this family eehn! Amaka. So these people are the so
called in-laws you brought okwa ya! Never will I allow you to marry into this
family.’’ Papa said as he pushed me aside and walked away.
I stood in
front of everyone, with tears wailing down my cheeks, I looked at my husband,
so helpless and weak to even stand my tears.
Chike looked
at me, still sitting on his chair, neither could I hear anything again, his dad
stood up and walked out as well.
It was like
a world war 1. Both families walking away in a day like this? What could be
wrong with these people? Does papa know them from anywhere?
Find out what action Amaka will take in the next episode....
