Quest for a greener pasture- Akure Chapter

One of the most important needs in life is a place to rest your head after a stressful long day.

Over the months, corps members in Akure found it quite challenging getting a place of their own. It has been discovered that many places in Akure are quite expensive to live especially when it come to housing. Corps members who were posted to Akure, the capital city, have realized that they need to constantly check their pockets before they make any payment regarding accommodation.
Everyone’s capacity differs. What one can afford, others might spend a year trying to raise money to pay for an apartment.

The issue of accommodation has affected many corps members posted to Akure because of the high prices attached to accommodation in Akure, especially those areas occupied by the elites. Fortunately, some corps members who were given accommodation in their various places of primary assignment do not have to go through the stress of getting an accommodation, compared to those who do not have a choice but to procure one for themselves.

It is quite difficult to get an accommodation in Akure, especially if you do not know your way around the city. Everything boils on where to live because the distance between your place of primary assignment and your residence must be in line with each other, in order to cut cost.

Living in a place that is about 2 hours far from your PPA will warrant you to spend all your monthly allowance on transportation, especially if you’re not being paid at your place of primary assignment, that is why it is good to cut your cloth. Although getting accommodation in Akure is a whole lot of work, especially in a situation where you don’t know anyone.

Miss Chioma Anam  a corp member posted to Alagbaka narrated her ordeal in her quest to finding accomadation of her own. She said that it wasn't an easy thing for her, adding that she never knew that coming to Akure would become a nightmare for her.
She said; " Hmmn! Akure has taught me a lesson. I have a story to tell to those coming behind me. I can not explain where these my legs has taken me to. "  She continued " but I am happy that I have met many people who have impacted my life in my journey for a greener pasture." She concluded by admonishing the incoming corps memento to always make enquiries about where they will be posted before moving there.

But as far as Akure is concerned, there are other places in the city where one can afford accommodation, in a situation where your money cannot afford a bigger accommodation;  you have no choice than to go for the cheaper ones.
Another corps member, Miss Ogechi Otuh, A strem 2 batch A call member recalled her ordeal while looking for an accommodation. She said that her own case was worse because she redeployed from Bauchi camp to Akure, without any knowledge of how things are run there. She briefed that everything was hard for her then especially getting an accommodation, she squatted with a family she didn't know for months while searching for a place of comfort.
" I was not easy for me then", she laughed hysterically and continued; "When I look back at my experiences with accommodation, I can not help it but to laugh. That's why I took up the duty of going to Ikare Akoko camp to pick cotps members, give them accommodation for the time being so that they will not be stranded on the road. It was quite a challenge for me ."

A situation occurred where four corps members spent a month and two weeks searching for accommodation. In the course of this search, most of the places they went to like Alagbaka, Oba-Ile, Oyemekun, Ijapo, to mention a few were quite expensive. It was quite challenging for them because getting an accommodation is not final solution but getting everything they need to furnish the house like curtains, chairs, mattress, shoe rack became an issue for them.

On the other hand, two corps members who were not able to get an accommodation were given a particular time to move out by a fellow corps member who became uncomfortable around them.  They were compelled to get their own accommodation on the other hand the landlord took advantage of them by asking them to lay on the same bed with him because they don’t have a mattress. It is very disheartening because corps members go through a lot like insult, physical abuse, racial discrimination, emotional setbacks and all sort of evil practices.

In a case where every corps members can afford accommodation at a cheaper price, it will be easier for them to get any accommodation of their choice. There is nothing as good as creating a better and comfortable environment for corps members serving in Akure.

Miss Oyinyechi One recalled that she was amazed how labdords and house agents call prices for accommodation as if corps members came to Akure with bags of money.
" I went to Fiwasaye to look for house. I actually saw a house that's suitable for a corp member. I met the landlord of the house and asked him how much he rents his house. The price I heard shocked me. I county even liaised with him further. I turned back and he never saw my back again."

Accommodation in Akure has become a scarce commodity in the sense that you to squat with someone for some months before getting a place of your own. Life in Akure for corps members has been a bit difficult and unbearable.

The best solution to get out of this situation is for incoming corps members to get ready and prepared for the challenge ahead of them.

Ensuring that they make thorough enquiries concerning the prices of accommodation in Akure , considering the money they have in their pockets so that they won’t have any reason to worry over how to go about getting their own accommodation.
