Over the years, refuse dumping has been addressed to the point that a body has been created to ensure that refuse are dumped properly. In some parts of Nigeria like Lagos ,Ibadan , Imo state and others has turned to a dumping ground for refuse.
Going by what have been observed in some parts of the state, what the eyes have seen is an eye sore and unspeakable. Most people have formed it as a habit to dump refuse anywhere they see; especially in the gutter. The most common of them all is pure water nylons. It is a stigma that cannot be changed.
A friend of mine travelled to Ibadan some years ago, she was disappointed at the way Ibadan was dirty and smelly. She couldn’t believe what she saw because Ibadan was placed so high by her until she went there. That’s why travelling is important . After that event, she believed that Ibadan belonged to the one of the dirtiest places she has seen in Nigeria.
Diseases are everywhere especially cholera which is an Airborne disease and one way to curtail this disease to ensure that our environment are kept clean and frenzy. Keeping an environment clean doe not require so much effort from us, all we need to do is to sweet and ensure that we do not drop wasted materials anywhere we see.
Dumping refuse in the gutter is unhygienic and improper. There are people who tried very hard to bring those things out of the gutter but will later left them on the road. Seeing the way flies perch on them, the offensive smell that pollutes the air calls for easy spreading of cholera and other airborne diseases.
Lagos state governor has tried to manage the habit of lagosians dumping refuse any where they like by ensuring that there is general environmental cleaning every Thursday. Not only in Lagos though but in some parts of the state.
The people adhered to this laid down rule but the funny thing is that We (Nigerians) cannot be thorough in doing this, that’s why some places in Nigeria are still looking dirty and unkempt.
Although Begger has been transformed and refined, refuse dumping cannot be refined and readdressed. There are some things that cannot be changed in Nigeria and that thing is refuse dumping.
No matter the penalty that has been placed on anyone who dumps refuse in an improper manner, they will still do what they know how to do best.
Most of us are guilty of dropping either pure water nylon, gala nylon or any waste particles we ate on the road . I have realized that doing such thing is wrong and it connotes that the person doing such is tagged to be a dirty person because whatever you did outside your house is what you will do in your house as well.
Some people will eat on the road and drop the waste product even in the gutter, and it does not stop at that individual ,another person will still do the same thing
It pains me a lot when I see those old women cleaning the road early in the morning. Some people will pass looking at them like poverty stricken people.
They do not know that those people are the reason that road they are passing everyday is clean and manageable.
Some people will say” they are doing their job, so why are they being paid.”
They are being paid quite alright but let us stop making their work stressful and hard. They sweep everyday to ensure that the road is kept clean and in order. Most of us have the habit of eating and throwing it even tge ruminants where they have swept .
There are some things that cannot be changed in this our country, but if we decide that dumping refuse anywhere can be changed , that change starts with us. Let’s endeavour to keep our surroundings need and tidy.
