A 36-year  old woman, Mrs Bosede Oyetunde, a resident of Omotosho afforestation center in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo state was arrested on  July 13 for throwing a newly born baby inside a black nylon bag.

It was learnt that the 36-year old mother, Bosede Oyetunde and her daughter, Opeyemi Issac were last Tuesday convicted for dumping the baby in the bush.
It was  gathered that Oyetunde was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment by a family court in Oke Eda, Akure, Ondo State, after she was found guilty of the crime.
Oyetunde and her daughter, Opeyemi, were said to have put the baby, a male, inside a nylon bag before abandoning him in the bush. The baby however, survived the ordeal.
They were reportedly apprehended by men of the Igbotako Police Division and subsequently charged on two counts of felony and attempted murder.
According to charge sheet , the offences committed contravened “sections 516, and 320(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges against them. Opeyemi, after the court session, claimed that her mother told her that the child had died.
In her ruling, the chief magistrate, O.A. Edwin, also ordered that the convict report at Igbotako Police Station to render two months’ community service, after the completion of her jail term.
More so, the magistrate ordered the baby’s mother to breastfeed her child in the Ondo State Children Home, under the supervision of the police, for a month.
Speaking with the Journalists after the ruling, the Officer in Charge of the Special Children Center, A -Division, Ondo State said, “The police on patrol wanted to defecate in the forest before he stumbled upon a black nylons that has the shape of a baby.
“They opened it and saw a baby inside in a pool of blood and the curd was left uncut. They brought the baby down to Igbotako police station.”
Speaking further, she said she got a call from the Commissioner of Police, Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, asking her to come down to the police station.
“When I got there, lo and behold, I saw why she asked me to come to her office.
“I took the baby down to Akure immediately and handed him over to Police Hospital, Oda Road; the baby is still under my care up till now”, she said.

She added that she performed naming ceremony for the child and they were able to raise the sum IG #1800 on his behalf .

The mother, Mrs Opeyemi while speaking, expressed her regret, saying that it was the devil that pushed her to do what she did, adding that it was also lack of fund that pushed her into throwing the baby away.

She said: “We had no money to take care of myself and the baby and my husband was not taking care of us, that was why my mother threw the baby away.”
